• What's the difference between electric cars and hybrids?

    Both electric cars and hybrids have battery packs and electric motors. The main difference between the two is that electric cars charge their battery packs by plugging into the electricity grid while hybrids do not. Because they have rechargeable battery packs, electric cars deliver guaranteed all-electric driving distances, unlike hybrids that only use the electric motor when you first accelerate and when you come to a stop. There are three types of electric car:

    Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV)

    A BEV, often called a fully electric car, is powered 100% by electricity and never uses gasoline. BEVs available for sale in Canada, include:

    Parallel Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (Parallel-PHEV)

    A Parallel-PHEV, often called a plug-in hybrid, has a battery pack + electric motor and a gas tank + gas engine. The battery pack and electric motor drive the car for the first 20-40 km before the gas engine turns on for longer trips. Parallel PHEVs available for sale in Canada, include:

    Series Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (Series-PHEV)

    A Series-PHEV, often called an extended range plug-in hybrid, has an electric motor, battery pack and gasoline generator. The battery pack drives the car for the start of the trip. Once the battery is empty, the gas generator turns on to extend your total driving distance. The main difference between a Parallel PHEV and a Series PHEV is that in a Series PHEV your foot is always connected to the electric motor. Series PHEVs available in Canada, include:
